Hello,

I am currently trying to establish some details of my grand father, Achille Capaldi, who arrived in Scotland, Edinburgh circa 1905.

He had relatives in Scotland, however I am not sure of their names or how he was related.

He worked in Munich, Germany prior to Scotland.

I believe he originally came from the Picinisco area of Italy. Born 1879

His father's name was Sante Capaldi

His mother's name was Angela Maria Fusco

He had cousins in Scotland named Coppolla and Gizzi?

His sisters emigrated to USA. Chicago and New York

Names of possible relatives in USA: Philomena, Angelina, Leondra (Had son named Larry) Emanuel, Carmelia (had daughter Carol) and Emil Di Salve


Any specific or general information on, Achille and/or his relatives or Italian immigration to Scotland from the Picinisco area would be much appreciated.

Here is a list of all Capaldis who died in Scotland up to 1955. Your grandfather is on it, as is a Carolina who had Gizzi as another surname. I don't know if it is any use, but it might jog some memories. Incidentally, did your grandfather marry in Italy or Scotland?

Thanks very much for this info.

Achille actually married twice. His first marriage in 1906 was to Margaret Gundel in Edinburgh. I believe she died in childbirth some time later.

His second marriage was to my grandmother in 1919 to Hannah Gatensby again in Edinburgh.

I have checked the 1901 census and he does not appear on it, therefore I can only assume that he must have arrived in Scotland after 1901 and before 1906.

I have written to the Italian Consulate in Edinburgh asking if they hold any records. He did not become a British citizen. No records on Scottish Records office of hi entry into the country.

He had relatives in Glasgow, my aunt can recall that she had cousins called Dominic and Nancy Gizzi from Glasgow.

She also recalls that cousins in Edinburgh were called Coppola. Their names Yolande,Philip, Adrian and Claude

I will check the names on your list.

the exact birthdate of Sante CAPALDI who married Angela Maria FUSCO ?
I'm sure that SANTE and ANGELA don't married in Picinisco and that
Achille isn't born in Picinisco.

I have a list of all people called CAPALDI born in Picinisco since 1566.

Thank you for replying.

Unfortunately I do not know when or where Sante Capaldi married Angela Maria Fusco.
The only information I have came from Achille's marriage certificate in 1919 in Edinburgh. On it he has written his father and mother's names. His father was a farmer. Both were deceased at the time of his marriage.

All other information is anecdotal and very vague. The main reason I concentrated on Picinisco is because the majority of Italians living in Edinburgh come from the Picinisco area.

When you confirm that you have no records relating to these names in your Picinisco files does this mean only the town of Picinisco?
Do your records include names in San Gennaro, Villa Latina, San Giuseppe and Atina?

I may have to look further away to other areas such as Cassino, Isernia and Venafro.

I know from my aunt that he (Achille) lived in a mountainous area and Cassino was in that area.

It is good to get this information from you as it means I can, if necesssary, widen my search area.

Indeed, I have a person called Sante CAPALDI born on January 31, 1869 in
Picinisco - S. Gennaro. If this person is indeed the one you are looking
for, you are quite originating from Picinisco.

Do you know if Sante had brothers or sisters? That could be a means of
confirmation.
Do you know the father's name of Sante ?

S. Giuseppe and S. Gennaro are hamlets of Picinisco and Villa Latina and
Atina are other cities near Picinisco. But I'm unable to give
information about families of Atina or Villa Latina. I make only
researches about Picinisco.

By tracing the genealogy of CAPALDI, I found only people who came from
ATINA and FILIGNANO.
FUSCO family comes from Villa Latina.

However the Sante Capaldi that you refer to as being born in San Gennaro in 1869 cannot be the person we are looking for as Achille was born in 1879. Sante would therefore be only 10 years old.

Unfortunately I have extremely limited knowledge of the names, dates of birth, deaths and marriages of my Italian ancestors.

Achille Capaldi sisters names were Philomena, Angelina, Leondra & Carmelia They all emigrated to USA.

I believe he had a brother who died at a young age. Could this be the Sante born in 1869?

Stuart - there was an Adrian Coppola who died in Edinburgh in 1953. He may be one of the cousins you mentioned. The other interesting Capaldi is possibly the Sante on the list above who died in Leith in 1947. Could it be possible that he was a brother to your grandfather? If you can find a sibling who married in Italy, but had children in Scotland, their birth certificates would list the place of marriage - and so the village of origin. It might be worth digging out both of these death certificates. It sound like you are going to have to follow a paper trail of extended family certificates until you strike gold. I see your location is in Edinburgh - so you are probably cheapest doing this at New Register House rather than trying to do it online.

Michel - unfortunately I don't have exact dates of death - only the years. I am very slowly trying to compile a database of most of the Italians who died in Scotland up to 1955, but it is a slow, (and costly) business! If you like I can send you a list of Capaldi deaths in database format. Tell me what other surnames interest you and I will see what I can find out.

Another thing for future reference - a very kind cousin from France gave me a list of births, marriages and deaths from Casalattico from 1809 to 1870 which he had transcribed from the Mormon microfiche. None of the names you are searching for are listed there - so that rules out that comune! One less place to search!

Good evening Marisa,

Some good observations there and in previous posts. Slowly piecing together snippets of info.

Achille only had sisters and possibly a brother who died at a young age in Italy.

You are correct that Adrian Coppola I believe was a cousin of my father James, uncle Louie and aunt Elizabeth. Betty is still alive and she visits Edinburgh from Coventry once a year and this is where I ask her to jog her memory about info when she was a girl.

Also I managed 18 months ago through genes reunited to make contact with Adrian Coppola's granddaughter but she did not have any info about her Italian roots. She promised to get in touch with her mother Adrian's daughter who currently lives in Spain but has never got back to me.

I am fortunate to live in Edinburgh and have visited the records office on several occasions. I am due to take early retirement soon and plan to spend some time in searching for any records held.

One point of interest to me on your list of Capaldi's death records. I knew Achille married Margaret Gundel in 1906 and I was told she died in childbirth but from your records she had a child named Margaret who seemingly died in 1909 age 1 year and then Margaret Gundel died in 1910 which is new info. Also the registration district is recorded as Kirkliston and I had no idea that Achille lived in the Kirkliston area, I thought he always lived in Edinburgh. I will certainly raise this with my Aunt Betty went she visits later this year

Just because there is no baby listed doesn't mean that Margaret did not die in childbirth. In 1910 a stillbirth would not have been registered. A birth only had to be listed where the baby had taken a breath. This happened to an ancestor of mine - Serafina Carmina Gizzi of Picinisco who died in childbirth in Wales in 1874. There was no listing of a birth because the child was stillborn. I think (but I'm not entirely sure) that the law changed around 1939 so that all births, live or otherwise, had to be registered.

After further seaching and family discussions I am now in a position to update my posting with the following information.

My great grandfather and great grandmother Sante Capaldi and Angela Maria Fusco possibly came from the Picinisco, Atina area of Italy.

My grandfather Achille Capaldi born in 1879 in Germany? Whilst his parents were living and working temporarily in Germany. The family returned to Italy, I do not know date.

Achille had a brother, Louis Capaldi, who died at a young age I do not know date.

Achille had 4 sisters named, Carmelia, Filomena, Leondra and Angelina they all lived in the USA. From approx. 1920 to 1950 they and their children lived at Racine Avenue, Chicago.

Achille as a young man lived and worked in Munich, Germany. I do not know exact dates.

Achille then moved to Edinburgh, Scotland circa 1905.

In 1906 he married Margaret Gundel. Witnesses at his wedding were Alexander Di Marco and Liberato Gabriele

His relatives in Edinburgh were Alexander Di Marco, Maria Civita Di Marco, (born 1884) “Nancy” Annunziata Gizzi ( born 1887) and Domenico Gizzi (born 1890).

Maria Civita Di Marco’s parents were Luigi Di Marco (Confectioner) and Maria Nascenza Faccenda.

Paolo Coppola’s parents were Carmine Coppola (Farmer) and Pasqua Di Marco

Annunziata Gizzi’s parents were Sante Gizzi (Farmer) and Catterina Valente
