This is my first post on my first day as a member of this forum. I am Peter Barnes ,63, retired and like most of you researching family history.

Most of my info comes from mum,85, and her 3 younger sisters. Our family name is Margiotta- originating around Caserta but settling in Picinisco/Frosinone

Grandad Girardo born 31/03/1897 Manchester England- father Antonio Margiotta married to Maria Assunta Pelosi (street organ players) Antonio had a brother Angelo Margiotta married to Anna/Annie Capocci(again street organ players)

Protano(a)/ andreucci

Girardo Margiotta married Rosa Protano in England But my nonna Rosa came to England from "Frosinone" when she was 23. She died 1957 aged 63 so was born 1894. Girardo had a sister Maria/Mary who was married to Arcangelo Andreucci, born Picinisco c 1883. Arcangelo had a brother Giovani/John again born Picinisco c 1886. the 2 brothers started an ice cream business in Manchester, England, and traded as "John Andrews Ices"

At the time of the 1911 census John was married to Maggie,a girl from Sale Cheshire, England and they had 2 children Mary and Alek.

As a child i remember Alek selling ice cream and met him several times as I quite like the stuff! i regularly write to Alek's grand daughter who contacted me via the Tony Rea Little Italy website.

It would be good to receive any information from members who might know some of the italian history of my family and I await the outcome of this post.

This afternoon, here at Picinisco, there is the funeral of Maria Livia MARGIOTTA. She died yesterday. She had 97 years. It was the widow of Vincenzo FERRI.

Thank you for your message and I look forward to receiving your further news this evening.

The Girardo Margiotta mentioned in my first posting was my Grandfather on my mothers side. He and Rosa Protana had 5 children My mum, Phyllis 85; her younger sisters are Teresa 83 Mary 79 and Madeline 75. Madeline was a twin whose brother, Dennis died at birth.

As i said Girardo was born in Manchester, England, but Rosa his wife came over from "Frosinone" when she was 23 years old probably towards the end of WW1 in 1917. I know she had lots of siblings but not sure of the names.

The Margiottas and Andreucci's were quite close and my Aunt Madeline says it was Arcangelo Andreucci who taught Girardo to write. Girardo's sister Maria/Mary married Arcangelo probably before they came to England but I do not know dates etc from Picinisco.

The 1911 census sheets were only last year released in Uk and I have the sheet for the Andreucci's and Arcangelo completed this in his own handwriting- with the information that he, wife Mary and brother john/Giovani were all born Picinisco. from my research it seems that the margiotta side of the family did not take part in the censuses of 1901 and 1911

I have photographs of Girardo, Rosa and Maria Assunta and of Giovani Andreucci with his first ice cream cart. Giovani's son, Alek was born in England and worked for dad and uncle on the ice cream round. I am 63 now but remember him providing the family regularly with free ice cream. I am in touch with Alek's grand daughter today

I have a little Andreucci information as follows;

this information comes from my mother and her sisters and from the UK 1911 census

Arcangelo Andreucci was head of the family and was 28 years old at the time of the 1911 census- so born c 1883 census says he was born Picinisco and is completed in his own handwriting

His wife is Mary Andreucci (nee Margiotta) aged 20 in the 1911 census so born c 1891 again in Picinisco

Giovani/John Andreucci is his brother again born Picinisco aged 25 at the census so born c 1886

Giovani was married to "Maggie" in 1904 Maggie was english from Sale, Cheshire, England. At the time of the census John and Maggie listed 2 children -Mary Andreucci aged 5yrs "at school" and Alek aged 2.

I have told you that I remember as a child of about 11 meeting Alek several times because he worked in the family business selling ice cream.

The ice cream business started from the home of Arcangelo and Giovani and in the census this is listed as 376 Oldham Road, Manchester- at the heart of the Manchester italian community. The name of the business was anglicised to "John Andrews Ices" was in being for the 1911 census and must have been gioing still say in 1954 when I regularly saw Alek on the ice cream van.

In the 1911 census Arcangelo listed himself as a shopkeeper and Giovani as a street musician. A family source says that Giovani died aged 42 but that Maggie lived to age 79

Arcangelo was known as "Aracange" to my gran Rosa- obviously the name was changed by her Italian accent.

Mum and her sisters say that Arcangelo and Mary went on to have several children. Not in order but Matthew born c 1928 Luigi born c 1911 Alfredo born c 1926 Winifred born c 1930 Mary born c 1916 Miducio born c 1912 and Pietro born c 1926

Today I am researching Arcangelo ANDREUCCI. I have found! I also found Giovanni ANDREUCCI and his marriage with Maggie (Margarita ROYLE).
I also continued research on the Margiotta. I continue tomorrow morning, I think that I have finished.

I have already been in contact with Peter but now I have read this thread I thought I could tell you what happened to Archangelo.
Archangelo Andreucci is my husband's great grandfather. He was, as you know, married to Maria Margiotta - who my husband remembers fondly so (I will get confirmation of the exact date) I'm guessing she died in the late 1960's. I also have record of Archangelo's brothers Guiseppe(John) and also Antonio (b. 1885) - he appears on the 1901 census but I can find no record of him after that.
Archangelo and Maria had 6 children Matteo, Luigi(b. 1911), Winifred (b. 1916 d. 2006), Mary (b. abt 1920 died as a child), Pietro (b. 1926) and Alfredo (b. 1926). They had a family ice cream business on Oldham Road and then in Ancoats in Manchester. Sadly, in 1940 - ironically, whilst Pietro was away fighting for Great Britain in Africa Archangelo, his father, was taken from home in the middle of the night and interred before being deported. He was on the SS Arandora Star on the 2/7/1940 bound for Canada when it was sunk. Legend goes that Archangelo hit his head on a lifeboat and somehow because of that was saved from drowning. He was taken back to Liverpool and hospitalised but as soon as he was well enough he was deported to Australia where he stayed for 4 years. He returned to the UK after the war but arrived back with bronchitis and died less than a fortnight later. My husband's grandmother, Winifred, never saw her father again after the night he was taken away in 1940.
Pietro lived with his mother, Maria, until she died.
Winifred married Fred Trafford in 1933 and had 2 children, Antony and Angela. Antony (Uncle Tony) lived with his mother (Winifred) until she died in 2006 and still lives in Denton, Manchester. Angela married Ron Henshall and had 3 children, Susan, Vincent (my husband) and Julie, sadly she died in 2005.


Out of interest - on the Margiotta side I came across a Diamante Margiotta (born 1889 in Picinisco) travelling from Naples to New York on the 'Roma' to work....

Hope this is of some interest...and I would be very interested in the Andreucci family history - Peter tells me you are working on it!

Excuse me for the delay, but as I say, I had a lot of work.
For the Margiotta family I am raised to the early books. Before these dates there are no entries.

In fact, I have yet been back a generation but the Margiotta came to a different village. Antonio MARGIOTTA very probably came to Picinisco to 1588 or 1589. He was already married to Bernardina which I find's family name.

I do not find the village of origin of the Margiotta before this date. May I find later by other research.

My name is Alan Robinson i am the great grandson of Giovani Andreucci
on my mothers side i noticed on the forum that you mentioned him being married to maggie and having 2 children Mary and Alec they also had John
Joseph Philomena and Frances my grandmother being Philomena although i never met her she died of tb when my mother was 2 she was then adopted by Frances who never had children of her own, who i know as my grandmother she died aged 71 in 1982.
I dont have much information on Giovani`s brothers or even any names regarding his mother and fathers names could you help me with this and any photo`s you may have.

Do you have a Giuseppe Margiotta (b. 11.10.1866) on your family tree at all? He married Filomena Cascarini in Swansea in 1891. She was the sister of my great grandfather, Luigi Cascarini.
